Might: Five Minute Fridays

This post is part of Five Minute Fridays Link-Ups. This week’s writing prompt is “Might.”

Time begins now….

I like to think of myself as a fairly reliable person. I don’t like to make commitments that I know I will have trouble following through on. Still, sometimes I say I “might” do something or other and don’t end up doing it. I am not always fully trustworthy. I think my kids know by now if I say we “might” go somewhere or do some activity, it is not a guarantee. “Might” implies that it is not always likely to happen.

But there is no “I might” with God. In Him we have full assurance that what He says He will do will come to be fulfilled. He is fully trustworthy and faithful to follow through on every promise He has made. And this is reassuring in both his Justice and his Mercy. When He says He will bring about the judgment of sin and evil in the world, even though we don’t see it happening yet, He will eventually punish all evildoers and uphold the cause of justice. And just as comforting (probably more so) is His promise that He will be gracious and merciful to all who call on Jesus as Savior, faithfully forgiving our sins and securing for us a place with Him in heaven. There are so many promises in Scripture that are yet to be fulfilled for the Christian, but we can be confident that the Lord will do what He says, because with Him it is always “I will” and never “I might.”

Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign LORD.’

Ezekiel 12:28 (ESV)
